Course Description:  Ivy’s TESOL/TEFL certificate program will prepare students (teacher trainees who are non-native English speakers) to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) abroad (in their home country). This thirty two (32) week coursework, consisting of eighteen hours per week, will focus on the theory and methods of teaching English to young, beginner-level English language learners (approximately 5-12 years of age). More specifically, the classes will cover the following topics: the phonological, grammatical and lexical structures of English; first language acquisition; teaching the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing; classroom management, including lesson planning and syllabus design; teaching methods and materials; and professional development.  Students will also develop materials that can be used in future classrooms and present lessons to the class to accumulate necessary teaching practice.
